“The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one.” (Matthew 13:38)
There’s a Christian song sweeping the country about the faces we’ll see when we get to Heaven; faces that were touched by the things we did for the Lord Jesus in our service to Him.
I couldn’t help but to think of Mr. Harris, my Sunday school teacher when I was a twelve year-old boy. He’ll certainly see a lot of faces when he gets to Heaven. In fact, while my own salvation did not come for another twenty-six years, this man may have had as much to do with it as anyone. I’m sure he wondered whether the seeds he had planted in my life were in fertile soil.
Mr. Harris often told us about his coin collection. One Sunday, he brought it to class for us to see. He had the most unusual collection I had ever laid my eyes on. These coins were coins from Jesus’ day, so old and worn you could hardly make out the image on its face.
I’ve thought about that Sunday countless times over the years. All the kids thought we had him fooled. The only reason we even asked him to bring his collection in was to get out of a Sunday school lesson, but he was a step ahead of us. That collection was as powerful of a lesson as could be taught. You see he knew that if he could show me a coin that circulated in Jesus’ day, then maybe I’d realize that Jesus was real, too.
I can’t thank him enough for making Jesus real to me. The truth is we should all do our best to sow seeds for the kingdom and let God handle the rest. That’s what I believe Mr. Harris did. Thank God for him!
That song I mentioned was written by a young songwriter named Rodney Griffin. It’s called Faces. Here’s my favorite verse:
He said, “Though you did not see the yield”
“You were faithful to plow the field”
“At other times, you helped me plant the seed”
“No matter how small the task”
“You did just as I asked”
“And thanks to you, these souls have been set free!”
And for those years you thought nobody saw, as you labored in lowly places
One day, He’ll smile and show you all the faces
God’s really not interested as much in our ability as he is in our availability. We’re just vehicles for Him, whether we leading millions to Christ as Billy Graham has done, or, as with Mr. Harris, just showing a small group of boys a box of old Roman coins.
